Grade 3

The emphasis in the third grade changes from learning to read to reading to learn and to thinking for themselves. Third graders usually grow in leaps and bounds in their ability to accept responsibility for themselves and their work. I encourage this by having them write, with help at first, their daily homework assignments. We learn about appreciating the earth and all human beings, work on handwriting development, solidify math skills, study science, social studies and, of course, literature.

Homework assignments are written every night in the homework planner. During the first quarter, the daily homework consists of 20 minutes of reading (student's choice), at least 10 minutes of flash card drill and several pages of homework, which are reinforcement of lessons taught that day. There is no Friday homework unless there is unfinished work that needs to be completed. There are many projects, field trips and contests throughout the year. Deadlines are important.
